Mark Higgins

Mark is an experienced executive with a multi-decade track record growing clean energy technologies, businesses, and project portfolios. As the former chair of the US Secretary of Commerce’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee, and board member/advisor to the California Energy Storage Alliance, Australian Energy Storage Alliance, Vehicle-Grid Integration Council, Mark has deep connections running throughout the North American, Australasian and Pacific Rim energy ecosystems. Mark currently mentors numerous cleantech startup companies through his involvement in the Cleantech Open, Energy Lab (Australia), as well as WaveMaker Labs and The Basement at UC San Diego, and Village Capital’s Dream Climate Tech Launchpad program.

Mark’s prior executive experience includes serving as the Chief Commercial Officer and President of North America at Redflow, a zinc-based long duration energy storage manufacturer, where he grew the company’s project pipeline more than 30x in a 3-year span, and securing transformational contracts and grants from the US Department of Energy, US Department of Defense, and California Energy Commission.

Mark also co-founded Resilient Earth Ventures, a mission-driven fund focused on accelerating clean, sustainable, resilient energy and food technologies and projects in islands and remote communities. Mark is also the former COO and board member at Strategen, where he ran the company’s global consulting business, opened up an Australian subsidiary, and managed company operations. Mark held past leadership roles at PG&E, SunEdison, Fotowatio, and MMA Renewable Ventures. He developed and sold FRV’s California utility-scale renewables portfolio to SunEdison, a core component of the company’s multi hundred million dollar M&A transaction. Mark also has utility scale and distributed renewable energy project development and private equity experience in Hawaiʻi, Australia, other parts of North and South America, the Caribbean and Pacific Islands.

Mark also has a strong venture capital and investment banking background, including placing over $125 million in equity for publicly traded companies while at Roth Capital Partners, and serving as the founding Associate at Finistere Partners, where he managed the launch of a $70 million Pacific-rim focused venture fund investing in the agtech and medical devices sectors.  Mark has also worked for the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service in Auckland, New Zealand, and as a systems analyst at Deloitte Consulting’s Chicago office. Mark holds a Master of Pacific International Affairs from the University of California, San Diego, and a Bachelor of Arts in government from the University of Notre Dame.

Mark has a wife and two children and lives in Oakland, California. As a passionate waterman, you can usually find him spending all of his free time in the ocean.
